Make Money at Home - an Essential Checklist
Posted by MANASI DUTTA on Thursday, March 12, 2009
Six things you will need if you are serious about building a home business:
1. The will to do what it takes, to make sacrifices.
2. Definite hours you can set aside
3. Clear goals of what you want to achieve
4. Self discipline
5. A product or service you can be passionate about
6. A business attitude
The will to do what it takes
You do not have to get up tight about this. You do not have to give yourself a pep talk. You simply decide, calmly and definitely, that you will start to build a home business. If you think of the needs of you or your family you will find it easier. If you or they did not have a need, you would not have entertained the idea in the first place. Having the will to start is very important. We all have things we would like to do, a wish list, but will never do. They are nice to have but they are really daydreams. Make the decision now, that you are going into business for yourself.
Set aside definite hours of work
Most of us have full lives. Where can we fit in more activity, particularly something as potentially demanding as a home business? Sit quietly and think about it - brainstorm it, if you like, by yourself or with others. If you are working full time you may only have early mornings, evenings, weekends. If you are a mother at home or working part time may have time while the children are sleeping or between doing the chores, picking up kids.
Decide on your goals and write them down
This could be the one most important activity that will make or break your success.
Set clear, achievable goals. Someone has described goals as dreams with a deadline. Write down what you want to achieve and by when. Make them reasonable but challenging. Make them exciting. Keep them in front of you at all times - a constant reminder of why you are giving up leisure or family time. Visualise your having achieved some of them and enjoying the rewards. Make them real.
Self-discipline
You will need a good helping of this. But do not beat yourself up for the times you fail to follow through. We are only human. There will be times you will be too tired or fed up. Life has a tendency to hit us with several things at once. We sometimes need to stop and deal with issues. In fact, it is often better to do this so that we are free to get on with what we really want to do. Having clear goals and set times will help us to get back on track.
Find a product or service that you can be passionate about
This is vital. This will help you keep your promises to yourself. Of course you want to make money and, if you are making money, this will bring its own reward. But you need something more than this. You need the satisfaction of knowing you are doing something of value. You need to know you are making a contribution by helping others. If you cannot find something you love to do then get to love what you have to do or what you have chosen to do. Who wants to promote a product that lacks quality - one that lets people down? You cannot build a long-term business, which involves repeat orders or referrals, on a product that fails to deliver. You have to keep your promises.
Treat you home business like a business
Take you business seriously. Make sure you work on your business in the times you have set aside. It is easy to get distracted, particularly if you have a young family. But everyone in the family must understand that this is the time you have set aside to work. Eventually family members will understand and respect this and your own mindset will change. As time goes on and you start to make money you can reward yourself and others, which will underscore the value of what you are doing.
